If you're facing a major illness, chronic conditions, or grief, loss or a challenging life transition, you don't have to go it alone. Make connections and get help.

For millions of people, chronic illness and conditions are a part of day-to-day life. While some conditions or illnesses can be helped and managed through lifestyle changes and medication, research shows that depression rates are high among patients with chronic conditions and illness including: Diabetes, Cancer, Parkinson's, Multiple sclerosis, Arthritis, and Chronic Pain.

Although it's normal to experience chaos, fear and grief if you are struggling with a traumatic life altering disease or condition, here are a few strategies to help you cope with your condition:
  • Talk to your doctor. Make sure that you trust and can talk to openly about your condition and any ongoing questions and concerns.
  • Reach out to family and friends. Talk with people who support you. Add support groups and other community and online support resources to your support list.
  • Remember you are the expert when it comes to your experience. If you have questions about pain management or medication bring it up with your doctor.
  • It's normal to want to isolate, but isolation increases depression. Continue to do the things you enjoy and connect with others to boost your self-esteem and increase your sense of community.
But if you are having trouble sleeping, eating, and working, or you've lost interest in most of the activities you normally enjoy, get help.
